Movies Under the Stars

Cinematique of Daytona presents classic films on a giant screen under the stars...

Begins April 2009  Vintage Films by the River City Island Park

DAYTONA BEACH – Stars in the sky. Stars on the screen.

Six Saturdays from April through September will be filled with stars as Cinematique of Daytona presents a series of free outdoor films.

Each movie will be presented at dusk on the local fine-arts cinema society’s huge inflatable screen and theatrical sound system at City Island Park in Daytona Beach.

The offerings are geared toward a wide variety of audiences, and include some movies that already have been hits at previous area screenings.

Concessions will sell a variety of snacks and beverages, including a full bar, with some downtown Daytona Beach restaurants offering picnic and dinner packages.

APRIL 18: ``The First of May’’ – Filmed in Central Florida from a book by author Gail Radley and written by Gary Rogers, both of  DeLand, this all-ages-appealing tale of an elderly woman and young boy who run off to join the circus is a brilliant drama of visual and spiritual beauty. Stars include Julie Harris, Charles Nelson Reilly, Mickey Rooney and Joe DiMaggio.

May 16:  ``The Fly Boys’’ – Rocco Devilliers presented the film he directed and co-wrote to last year’s Daytona Beach Film Festival to an enthusiastic audience response. This adventure of two boys with a love for flying and an attraction for trouble embodies some amazing aerial stunt work to tell a heartwarming story.

June 20:  ``The Knife’ – Electronic music and avant-garde images propel this eclectic concert film of a Swedish duo. A film selected and sponsored by the Youth Collective.

July 18:  ``Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’’ – Now 40 years old but timeless, this four-Oscar winner (including Best Cinematography for one of cinema’s most beautiful films, 2 music awards and Best Screenplay), the rascally exploits of Butch and Sundance (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) hit the target for moviegoers.

August 22:  ``The Princess Bride” – Also written by William Goldman (who won the writing Oscar for ``Butch Cassidy’’) Rob Reiner’s masterly fairy tale features Carey Elwes, Mandy Patinkin and Robin Wright Penn as sword-slinging, dialogue-zinging characters in the Middle Ages comedy for all ages.

September 19:  ``Singing in the Rain’’ – It certainly didn’t sweep the Oscars, but Gene Kelley, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds danced away with generations of film lovers’ hearts in this marvelous musical.
